In March, we were learning History about the Irish Rebellion. Suddenly, a lady entered the classroom dressed as a French soldier from the Rebellion. This was to commemorate the arrival of General Humbert and the French army coming to Ireland from France to help the Irish soldiers during the Rebellion in 1798 against the British.
2023 marks the 225th anniversary of the landing of General Humbert in Kilcummin, here in Co. Mayo. We received 5 trees to plant in our school garden and an informative document about the history of the Liberty Trees. We were also delighted to receive a beautiful book about the 1798 Rebellion written by Steve Dunford. It has lots of information about the Rebellion for us to read. Our school received 5 birch trees. We were given the Birch trees from a committee known as Trees on the Land. They have planted more than a million trees at several thousand sites since 2013. These trees will grow up to 30m in later years.
Our school planted the trees at the back of our school beside our other trees. We will never forget our Irish history thanks to these trees.
